This step, although sounding strange, does work in many of these cases, especially for laptops. When a laptop is used for long periods of time it can cause static to build up around the internal parts.

If you do get a static build up inside your laptop, it can cause the system to shut itself down. This process can also work for when you have trouble with your internet connection.

Once these steps have been completed, you should check your power source and your battery separately. If the laptop works with the battery and not the power source, the chances are that your power adapter is faulty. If the laptop works with the power source but not just on the battery, then you probably need a new battery.

Some makes of laptop come with built in error light codes. These mean that you can just refer to the manual to find out the cause of the problem and rectify it accordingly.
